GOD MOST HOLY

Posted on December 16, 2011 by Tony Wood

A few thoughts on God most holy…

The Levitical Law pointed towards an understanding of the Father that wasn’t hopeful, “None could satiate” and that, “None could satisfy.” The idea that God’s holiness was truly unattainable seemed proven by the generation’s of blood sacrifice, that still left people in need of fulfillment and forgiveness. Even though the Law offered hope (Leviticus 26:1-13) it often brought judgment (Leviticus 26:14-46).

Often in my life I’ve viewed the Levitical Law as a complete ordinance. But, in Jesus’ own words He stated that He would, “Fulfill the Law” (Matthew 5:17). The word “fulfill” means to fill up, mature, and complete. In essence, to fill up an empty shell or copy as the author of Hebrews stated. This very premise asserts that the Law wasn’t complete, but unfulfilled. And that the new covenant finished what the original Law had begun to model. That God is holy, that none can be as holy, that a sacrifice of blood paves the way, that God would die, that this sacrifice would mean man may live, and take the place of all formerly incomplete sacrifices.

It’s not that the new covenant eradicated the concepts of holiness, the ordinances of reconciliation, nor the justice of KOL YAHWEH. The new covenant, and Jesus via death and ascension, completed the true form of what millenia of law had existed to speak towards.

Our faith in Christ isn’t separate from Levitical heritage but built largely on top of it. To love God and love others, in Christ, is to fulfill the law in its entirety. To know Christ is to have accepted the complete sacrifice and be known, even by God, as holy.
